BS EN 62305 is also known as BS 62305 for short which is a standard provided by the British Standard Institute (BSI) and it draw out the general technical aspects of lightning, illustrating its principle electrical, thermal and mechanical effects. It covers guidelines on how to analyse the risk of being struck and how to collect index figure as an aid to deciding whether a particular structure is in need of protection. The guidance given is of a general nature and its application to specific lightning protection installations has to take into account the particular conditions pertaining to those installations.

BS 62305 is taken seriously due to the fact lightning is a natural hazard, Every year millions of flashes strike the ground in UK and worldwide, Numbers of people have been killed and buildings have been damaged by lightning flashes. This standard can help minimise the risk of getting struck by a lightning flash and even where protection is provided it can never be completely effective in eliminating the risk of damage to the structure. This is why the application of lightning protection measures is essential.

BS 62305 provides the general rules that are to be followed in the protection against lightning of structures including their contents and installations also including people. The structure such as communication lines is also connected in the services. The content of this part of the standard covers the lightning current parameters, damage due to lightning, need and economic convenience for lightning protection and the protection measures.

It is illustrated in part 2 of BS 62305, the risk assessment of lightning flashes to the earth for a structure or service. The purpose of this is to provide a procedure for the evaluation of such risk to extent. Once a range of tolerable limit for the risk has been selected, the procedure allows the section of the appropriate protection measures to undertake and reduce the risk to the tolerable or below limit.

Part 3 of BS 62305 provides the analysis on different levels of protection against lightning. It is designed to assess the physical damage to structures and life hazard, So that it can come up with the right way of protecting against life hazard and such physical damage.

In part 4 of BS 62305, it provides information for the design, installation, inspection, maintenance and testing of a LEMP protection measures system (LPMS) for electrical and electronic systems within a structure, with ability to reduce the risk of permanent failures due to lightning electromagnetic impulse. It also provides guidelines for electrinic and electronical system of the protection measures for the designer, with the attempt to get the maximum effectiveness of protection. This part of the content of the standard contains the installation and design of a LEMP protecting measure system, line router and magnetic shielding and last but not least, a management of an LMPS.

BS 62305 promotes a model to assure that its standard provide useful framework drawn up as a specifications to help organisations of all sizes and types to overcome such lightning flash risk with minimal risk so that infrastructures and people are protected as much as possible. the adoption is done by organisations who want to protect themselves against possible lightning risk. Damage to people and infrastructures can be costly.
